About UNYA Queensland
UNYA Queensland is the Queensland division of UNYA Australia - a national youth organisation believing in the purposes and principles of the United Nations. The organisation aims to encourage young people to strive towards a greater understanding of global issues, and to educate them about the United Nations' structure, functions and future.

The Townsville Youth Forum 2009 is a two-day experience for students in years 10, 11 and 12, and is the largest regional engagement event for UNYA Queensland this year. Students will be engaged in debate, discussion and policy workshops to encourage critical thinking skills and to improve their knowledge of international affairs. The forum also includes the regional heat of our Hammarskjold Security Council debating competition, with the chance to attend the state final in Brisbane and perhaps the national final in Melbourne, later in the year. Schools from Townsville and the surrounding area are invited to register teams of two students for this exciting experience. For more information contact convenor Lily Bentley, at townsville09@unya.org.au.

The Hammarskjold Security Council Competition is a highlight on the UNYA Queensland calendar. Competing in teams of two, students choose a country, research its foreign policy and then represent its interests in a mock Security Council debate. Students are judged on the extent of their knowledge, the persuasiveness and presentation of their arguments and their skill at negotiation. Outstanding teams will be invited to a final and the best overall teams will have the opportunity to compete in the national competition in Melbourne. The competition is open to students from grades 10 to 12. The cost is $20 per person. Students are invited to register in teams of two or through their schools. Heats for Hammarskjold will be held in:
Toowoomba and Townsville: 10th October
Brisbane: 17th and 18th October
Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast: 24th October
