Education

One of UNYA’s principal objectives is to enhance awareness and understanding of international issues among young people. To that end, we run conferences and Model UN Security Council Competitions (which you can read about elsewhere on the website). We also have a program of school visits. A team of UNYA facilitators can come to your school and run a session for as little as a single lesson, or as long as a whole day. We run activities such as:

  • Seminars
  • ‘Joint Cabinet Crisis’ scenarios
  • Mock UN debates
  • Workshops on current affairs
  • 'Youth declarations': where UNYA listens to the views of young people on a particular topic/s and presents them to local politicians.
  • Activities on international affairs and the UN

Through our education program, UNYA Queensland hopes to raise awareness of the United Nations, its structure and processes, as well as the importance of a multilateral approach to problem solving. These sessions are of course open to all students, but are likely to be of particular interest to history, legal studies, international relations or political studies classes.

UNYA Queensland also runs periodic day forums. These are typically centered on a current issue, such as climate change or peace and security.

If you are a student, and are interested in participating in a conference, competition or day forum, or a teacher who would like UNYA to visit your school, please contact the Vice-President (Education), Jules Moxon at qldvped@unya.org.au.
